Holdout running back Chris Johnson and the Tennessee Titans agreed to a four-year extension on Thursday, the team confirmed.
A league source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter that the extension is worth $53 million with $30 million guaranteed. The extension will be tacked on to the two years he had remaining on his previous contract, putting him under the Titans' control through the 2016 season.
In the NFL these days, signing a running back to a contract like this is stupid. I mean the Titans don't really have a choice, they need Chris Johnson to compete. But it is a quarterback league.

Look at some great NFL teams. The Colts are always consistently good, and their running game is usually average at best. The Saints are a gun-slinging team with Drew Brees who use the run effectively, but not too often. The Patriots haven't given a fuck about getting a sick running back since Curtis Martin and Corey Dillon. And they have done pretty damn well without a Chris Johnson type.
And teams like the Vikings, who love them some Adrian Peterson, have been borderline good some years and non-competitors other years.
Chris Johnson is great, but running backs are prone to injury, and the money would be better spent on a nice quarterback. I mean Matt Hasselbeck is pretty dubious at best. Trainwreck at worst.
