Rhode Island Gets It: Medical Marijuana

Rhode Island claims its small size contributes to its compassionate stance on medical marijuana. Since 2007, there has been a medical marijuana law on the books in the state. According to High Times, there are 2,000 medical marijuana patients in RI. Originally the patients could list two "caregivers" to grow marijuana for their use, but now a new law passed in June is creating non-profit "compassion centers" to provide for the needs of patients.

Patients themselves are also allowed 12 mature plants as well as 12 immature ones. Possession of two and a half ounces of usable pot is legal. "Caregiver"s are allowed no more than 24 mature plants as well as 5 ounces of usable pot. This keeps the "compassion centers" small and non-profit, unlike the massive grow organizations in California and Colorado, obviously larger states with more demand for medical pot.
